Springing into 2017
December 28th, 2016

Dear Friends and Customers of Solo Bistro:
A mere five days have passed since the solstice, but midday walkers today were in shirtsleeves as the mid-winter sun mustered an unwonted warmth more appropriate to March or April than December! No doubt that will change very shortly, but it fits with a sense of dislocation more generally as we come to the end of this year – the “time is out of joint” was Hamlet’s formulation. We are at an uneasy moment in history, which would seem at least to be a point of inflection toward something outside the experience and expectations of recent decades. Some think that is good, many the opposite, but the purportedly Chinese curse springs to mind . . . .
Of course, even in interesting times, one needs to eat, which brings us inescapably to the epitome of price-conscious consumption of premium comestibles, the Wednesday Special at Solo Bistro, where you get fresh and local food expertly prepared for the laughably low price of $17.99! Eat, and eat well to boot!
Wednesday Special
For the last Wednesday Special until we re-open on Wednesday February 8, 2017, Chef Ray Franklyn will start the meal with a salad of baby romaine lettuce from Springworks Farm in Lisbon, with a lemon Caesar dressing. The main dish will be a mushroom risotto featuring oyster and shitake mushrooms, shallots, cream, fines herbes, and goat cheese – a regular fungi fest!. Dessert will be a key lime curd with ginger blueberries and whipped cream.
Friday Night Jazz December 30, 2016
Dave Clark, jazz and classical guitarist, teacher and music store owner from Belfast, returns to the New Space at Solo to close out another year of Friday Night Jazz. Don’t miss it, from 6:30 to 9:30 PM this Friday evening at Solo Bistro!
If you do miss Dave Clark though (or even if you don’t miss him), don’t forget that you can still come New Year’s Eve to celebrate and enjoy a final dinner chez Solo for five weeks as we close for our annual winter break.
As always, we look forward to seeing you on Front Street in downtown Bath, where imprecations fail to impress in the face of fine food, drink and fellowship. A happy 2017 to one and all – we look forward to seeing you again in February!

Calendrical Coincidence
December 21st, 2016

Dear Friends and Customers of Solo Bistro:
Like the so-called super moon of a month or so ago, a super holiday week looms just over the horizon, with Christmas Eve and the first night of Hanukkah co-incident for the first time in decades. And both coincide with the secular weekend as well, with Christmas and New Year’s Day on successive Sundays and Hanukkah bridging the gap between. Here at Solo Bistro, it also means we lose only one night of our regular schedule – Saturday the 24th – when we would otherwise be open. And as long as we’re looking ahead, New Year’s Eve is filling up, so make your reservation for the end of the coming hyper holiday week sooner rather than later!
In the meantime, the $17.99 Wednesday Special continues to bring exceptional dishes to diners at an exceptional price!
Wednesday Special
This pre-holiday week the $17.99 Wednesday Special opens with a Springworks Salad: baby romaine grown in Springworks’ aquaponic farming facility in Lisbon, with grated parmesan and lemon caesar dressing. The main course will come from the eastern shore of the Kennebec in Dresden, in the form of a stew of slow-braised Dragonfly Cove goat, carrots, potatoes and curry spices served over basmati rice. For dessert, a butterscotch pudding topped with whipped cream will delight even the most demanding pudding pundits present!
Friday Night Jazz December 23, 2016
Flash and Tina Allen return to the New Space with their voices and his keyboard to turn up the tunes in an evening of syncopated sophistication with songs from the jazz canon supplementing sumptuous suppers and superb sips supplied by distinguished distillers, brewers and vintners from around the globe. Satisfy your appetite for fine food, funk and classic jazz from 6:30 to 9:30 PM this Friday evening at Solo Bistro!
As always, we look forward to seeing you on Front Street in downtown Bath, where the congruence of taste and timing is more-than-merely coincidental!
