Lightin’ Up

Dear Friends and Customers of Solo Bistro:
Well, winter winds are whistling through the leafless, lifeless limbs, and the season seems in sync again with the calendar. The moon is most severe this time of year, it’s white light bright and breathtakingly beautiful, reflected by the white snow in the fields and woods and marshes, making of the world a marvelous mausoleum, all alabaster and white marble. Coming across the Kennebec on these cold, early nights, the length of Bath along the far shore is lit with luminous, multi-colored finery for the holidays someone in the city government wisely selected to testify to warmth and welcome in the midst of winter’s rigid, frigid splendor.
Solo Bistro is proud to be one part of that warm welcome, and never more so than on Wednesdays, when Chef Ray Franklyn’s $17.99 Wednesday Special evokes its own chorus of hallelujahs from time to time.
Wednesday Special
This week the $17.99 Wednesday Special starts out with a soup of local winter squash, topped with walnut gremolata. That will be followed by a plate of pan-seared Statler chicken breast, sautéed kale, horseradish mashed potatoes and red romesco sauce. The final course of caramel mousse with whipped cream may itself inspire a sweet hosanna or two from devotees of dessert!
Friday Night Jazz December 16, 2016
Ahmad Hassan Mohammed returns on Friday with his keyboard, ready to render classics and compositions of his own with a warmth and verve that make him a musical analogue to those multi-colored orbs so bravely bedecking the branches of trees now bereft of their natural raiment. Great, glad, jazz from one of the bright lights of Maine’s modern musical milieu, from 6:30 to 9:30 PM this Friday at Solo Bistro!

Tire-some Time

Dear Friends and Customers of Solo Bistro:
So a little sticking snow has glazed our ways and finally made it feel like winter is staking its claim to our attention. Those of us who have yet to mount their snow tires have been pointedly reminded of their oversight, and up at Cahill’s Tires the annual parade of procrastinators is peaking in the parking lot and waiting room. ’Tis certainly the season!
Of course, when winter’s chill sets in, a peckish person’s thoughts inevitably turn to hearty fare, and so too do those of one whose purpose is precisely to provide such provender as peckish persons prefer. If it’s Wednesday, and the purposeful provider in question is Chef Ray Franklyn, you know the $17.99 Wednesday Special at Solo Bistro will punch way above its weight – and puny price!
Wednesday Special
This week’s $17.99 Wednesday Special will begin with a winter salad of raw butternut squash, beets, and frisée in a cranberry honey vinaigrette. The main course will put paid to the wintery weather with a harissa-spiced chili of beef, pork, tomatoes and onions, served over basmati rice and garnished with cilantro sour cream. Ginger cake drizzled with orange caramel and topped with whipped cream will finish the meal with a flourish of flavor!
Friday Night Jazz December 9, 2016
Piano-man Mickey Felder will play the New Space at Solo again this Friday with his usual polish and panache, a perfect postlude to downtown Bath’s annual Holiday Open House! Mickey will be performing from 6:30 to 9:30 for your enhanced prandial pleasure.
